Tyler Mane and Renae Geerlings Talk "Compound Fracture", Music, and More
From ARTISTdirect.com
"We just watched Compound Fracture on the big screen in the screening room," smiles Tyler Mane. "When it ended, I got chills. It was so amazing and surreal to see a picture I put together on the big screen like that."
Mane deserves those good "chills". The star of Rob Zombie's Halloween and Halloween II, X-Men, and Troy has definitely put in all the requisite blood, sweat, and tears to get to this point. He reinvented "Michael Myers" to much fan and critical acclaim, and his towering frame and presence have evoked fear artfully in a slew of films. Now, he's launching his production company, Mane Entertainment, with its first project. The supernatural thriller, Compound Fracture, penned by his wife Renae Geerlings [who also stars in the flick] and himself.
The story follows Michael [Mane] as he returns to the home of his father [Muse Watson I Know What You Did Last Summer] in order to make a startling discovery and end up in a dark battle of wills. Elsewhere, another famous killer makes an appearance, the one and only Derek Mears of Friday the 13th-fame. Not only does Compound Fracture have an unforgettable story it's got three iconic serial killers in one dark ride—Mane, Mears, and Watson.
You can't miss it! There's a special screening for distributors in Los Angeles on September 25, and we'll have more info on that soon. For now, check out our exclusive interview with Tyler Mane and Renae Geerlings about Compound Fracture below.
Was it important for you to balance the dark elements of the film with an emotional family story?
Tyler Mane: Yeah, it's very story-driven. Renae comes from a theater background, and she's really into story. That gives another element to Compound Fracture that a lot of pictures miss out on. It's the story of a family pulled apart that needs to reunite to overcome.
Renae Geerlings: One of the things that really attracted me to the concept was the idea of all these broken characters. My history is really in theater as Tyler said. I spent a lot of years working around comic books. What moves me is based around characters. I said, "If I was going to do something with horror, it's got to be based on characters for me to really be excited about it". That was what I was able to bring to the table as far as that broken psyche goes and how to fix it.
Setting up the story with broken fragments draws the viewer in to want to watch how they'll come together.
Renae Geerlings: Exactly! One of my favorite scenes involves the sins of the father being revisited on the son. Every generation tries to do the best they can to give to the next. Sometimes, in doing our best, we mess the next generation up. Having Muse Watson as the patriarch of the family and having the brother-in-law played by Derek Mears, they both had their own ways of parenting and dealing with their insecurities trying to keep their family together. It gets dumped on Michael who's stuck in the middle.
The supernatural elements heighten the tension.
Renae Geerlings: They do! We're taught family is most important in this life. If you add the other element that it continues in the next life, you've got them all together in this storm, so to speak.
What resonated with you about Michael, Tyler? Was it easy to slip into his shoes?
Tyler Mane: It was. Renae said she wrote it with me in mind. He's a character who pulls away from his family at such a young age and has to reunite later on in life. He sees how things have changed from when he grew up and what his father has turned into. It's surreal.
How crucial was emoting through body language and saying something without uttering a word?
Tyler Mane: From a look you can convey how you feel about a situation. That also comes across a lot in Compound Fracture. We had Muse, the killer from I Know What You Did Last Summer, Derek, Jason from Friday the 13th, and myself. There are three serial killers right there. Add Leslie Easterbrook, Todd Farmer, Daniel Roebuck, and Renae. It's amazing.
Renae Geerlings: I tried to imbue a lot of Tyler in the character. Having such an infinite knowledge of Tyler, it was fun to write a character for him, knowing his verbal mannerisms and speech patterns. His dialogue came really easy for me. The dialogue for my character was probably the hardest [Laughs].
Were you listening to anything while making the movie?
Tyler Mane: I'm all '70s rock, my man! I'll listen to anything and everything '70s rock. We've got some great songs in it that take you back to that era. I'm so happy with that feel of it. Joel Richard did the score with Tyler Bates, and it’s unbelievable. After I listened to it, I called Joel and I said, "I just want to thank you for doing a hell of a job on this score". He said, "Well, my goal is to make it a cinematic experience". It was cool to hear that.
Renae Geerlings: I'd feel good about a scene. Then, I'd see it with the music over it, and it was incredible. There are whispers that happen within the score itself. They nailed it. During the process, Joel lost his father. I was talking to him, and he said this was an interesting project for him to work on at this particular moment dealing with the loss of parents and what that means. He poured that into this movie. It's just visceral.
What can you reveal about Penance Lane?
Tyler Mane: Penance Lane goes a little grittier. Compound Fracture is a supernatural thriller. Penance Lane is more of a horror thriller. My character gets released from prison and goes to a certain house to find something left behind. He encounters all kinds of craziness in the house. Throughout the story, it's revealed why and what he is looking for. Compound Fracture is more supernatural. Penance Lane is going to really freak some people out [Laughs].
Renae Geerlings: That one is such a different animal. It's straight horror. There's a creepy feel to parts of it. You don't really know what's going on. There are a lot of reveals. There's so much more action from the get-go. I'm excited to get into it.
Did you get to beat up Derek Mears?
Tyler Mane: Derek Mears is amazing to work with. We've known each other for years. I asked him to come on and try to beat my ass. He was all for it. When you work with a talented person like that and you have the ability to do fight scenes you enjoy doing where nobody gets hurt, it's such a pleasure to do this and create a vicious and violent thing. You walk away and go, "That was a lot of fun". He tries to kick my ass [Laughs].
What pumps you up for a fight?
Tyler Mane: I listen to Rush and Led Zeppelin—like "Immigrant Song". I'm a Pandora guy. I put on classic or old school rock and I flip through until I find something with a good, driving beat and I'm ready to go. I listen to Metallica when I'm ready to do fight scenes. It psyches me up.
What do you want people to walk away from this feeling or thinking?
Tyler Mane: Family's important, and you have to unite to overcome your obstacles. You have to set your differences aside with family because you are blood. Blood is thicker than water. You get the feeling family should come first at the end of the film.

Aquaman, Justice League Engage In Watery War With Atlantis
From USA Today
Sometimes it's not safe to go in the water, even for Aquaman.
He along with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League have more than Great White sharks to worry about in the sea when an army from the sunken nation of Atlantis attacks in the five-issue story line "Throne of Atlantis" starting in December in Justice League issue 15 and continuing in the pages of Aquaman.
It's all part of the second year for both DC Comics books written by Geoff Johns, and Justice League in particular will be showcasing new relationships (like the romance between Superman and Wonder Woman), new members in Shazam and the Atom, and a new rivalry between Batman and Aquaman.
"It's all about progressing the team and the members and the reality and the perception of what the Justice League is in the DC Universe," Johns says.
Starting in Justice League issue 13 next month, there will be arcs building toward the major "Trinity War" event, starting with the introduction of the villainess Cheetah and her connection with Wonder Woman, then moving to the Atlantis tale centered on Aquaman where the Justice League is caught between their world and a lost undersea society.
"There's an inciting incident that triggers some tensions" between the heroes, Johns says, "but really it's about taking a hard look at what the power of Atlantis is."
In addition to some drastic changes in the team, there will also be a switch in the art department: Jim Lee departs as Justice League artist, and Aquaman penciller Ivan Reis and colorist Joe Prado move over to DC's main team book.
"Ivan and Joe, they're pretty unmatched when it comes to grace and power and emotion in storytelling. They elevate everything they work on," says Johns, who worked with the duo on Green Lantern, Blackest Night and Brightest Day.
"These guys are rock stars and I'm glad they're getting the spotlight on Justice League. The characters deserve this kind of talent, and these guys deserve these kinds of heroes."
In "Throne of Atlantis," readers will learn a lot more about Aquaman and his disdain for the place he used to rule, Johns says. "Aquaman's going to have to make some decisions that the League won't necessarily agree with."
Aquaman and his love Mera have been trying to solve the mystery of Atlantis' sinking in the pages of Aquaman, and she'll play a major role in the crossover, too.
"Mera has absolutely no affinity for Atlantis," Johns says. "She's from a penal colony and was raised to go to war with Atlantis and ultimately fell in love with Aquaman and defected like he did to the land."
Johns has been planning for "Throne of Atlantis" for a while, seeding story threads in the first issues of Justice League and Aquaman last fall that will carry over into the new arc.
Atlantis also hasn't been seen yet in DC's "New 52" relaunch, so the world has no idea it even exists.
"There's still questions of what Atlantis is like and what they do and what they're capable of and why they exist and who sank Atlantis," Johns says. "There's all this mythology behind Atlantis that were not really sure of and no one really has any answers, and we're about to get the answers."
Reis and Prado are working on designing Atlantis and the Atlanteans, and they've also created a new look for Ocean Master, the old Aquaman villain who's also the hero's brother and the leader of the Atlanteans' world-spanning assault.
"Ocean Master's an interesting character," Johns says. "He doesn't dislike his brother — he just thinks his brother is incapable of leading Atlantis and he's proven over and over he can't. He thinks his brother's a little naïve on how it works.
"And if he's in his way, he's in his way."
After facing off with Darkseid and his horde of Parademons, everybody the Justice League has fought have pushed the team in different directions, Johns says, and the Atlanteans are no different.
"They don't just come up out of the water to say hello," Johns says. "The Justice League is trying to come together and become the team that Aquaman said in issue 12 the team needed to be: a team that trusts each other, that knows each other, and there are no secrets anymore.
"They're trying to get through all that in this arc, and now they've got to deal with some of these things that they don't know about each other and are literally rising up out of the waters they're going to have to come face to face with."
Sometimes it's not safe to go in the water, even for Aquaman.

Tranformers 4 Temporary Logo And Plot Details Revealed
From Superherohype.com
It seems that the story for Transformers 4 will be heading in a new direction. President and CEO of Hasbro Brian Goldner spoke at the UBS Best Of Americas 2012 Conference (via TFW2005 and Bleeding Cool) where he discussed the company's plans for the future, including what they've got in store for the Transformers film series.
While Transformers: Dark of the Moon did well at the box office ($1.1 billion worldwide) it didn't do so well at the one thing these kind of films are made for...selling toys. With this idea in mind, the company wants the fourth film to include an all new cast of robot characters with a story revolving around them (so they can sell more toys). This isn't a totally shocker as Michael Bay has said previously that the film will feature 'an all new cast,' thought we never interpreted that to mean the robots too. Economically this decision makes sense for Hasbro and, frankly, weren't we all getting a little tired of seeing the same old Autobots fighting the Decepticons? Maybe now they can bring in the much longed-for Dinobots.
The fourth film is currently being penned by Ehren Kruger with Bay back as the director. It is said to be a slightly smaller film in budget than the previous movie and Bay hopes to have some of it take place 'off planet.' Bay also says this will be his last outing in the director's chair for Transformers and that he's making way for a new director to take over the 'new trilogy.'
The new movie is scheduled to be releases on June 27, 2014.

Meet The New Justice League Artistic Team
Justice League #16 cover. |
Starting December 26th, with Issue #15, Jim Lee will step down from Justice League as illustrator to pursue his next major DC project. But more on that in October at NYCC.
In response to the announcement Justice League writer Geoff Johns had this to say about the switch:
“There is no other choice for the next A-Star art team on JUSTICE LEAGUE. Ivan Reis and Joe Prado bring power, grace, emotion and epic storytelling worthy of the world’s greatest super heroes. From GREEN LANTERN to BLACKEST NIGHT to AQUAMAN, I couldn’t ask for better collaborators. The second year of JUSTICE LEAGUE will begin an adventurous, mysterious and heroic storyline focusing on our members as their greatest secrets are revealed...and the repercussions change the world. Ivan and Joe begin with a story they were born to draw — THRONE OF ATLANTIS — a story between JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN that will have the League experiencing what Aquaman does — they’ll be caught between land and sea. With new relationships developing – like Wonder Woman and Superman – new members coming on – like Shazam! and the all-new Atom — and new threats rising — like Ocean Master & Atlantis — the Justice League will grow and change as we march towards the impending TRINITY WAR.”

Michael Clarke Duncan, DAREDEVIL's Kingpin, GREEN LANTERN's Kilowog, Dead at 54
Actor Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away at the age of 54, according to multiple sources including the Associated Press.
Duncan's death was confirmed by a statement from his fiancée, former Apprentice contestant Omarosa Manigault. Reports say he died Monday morning in a Los Angeles hospital, where he was receiving treatment following a July 13 heart attack.
Among multiple high-profile roles, Duncan portrayed classic Marvel villain the Kingpin in 2003's live-action Daredevil film. The movie was notable for casting an African-American actor as a character traditionally depicted in the comic books as Caucasian, which preceded similar moves including Samuel L. Jackson appearing as Nick Fury in several Marvel Studios films, and British actor Idris Elba playing Heimdall in 2011's Thor.
As a voice actor, Duncan reprised the role of Kingpin in the MTV's 2003 Spider-Man animated series, and voiced roles in the Teen Titans and Static Shock cartoons. He acted in two more comic book-based movies, as Manute in 2005's Sin City, and the voice of CGI-rendered Kilowog in last year's Green Lantern.
Duncan's breakthrough role was as John Coffey in 1999's The Green Mile, earning him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actor.
