STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS: CHRIS PINE REVEALS BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH'S GARY MITCHELL TRANSFORMATION SCENE?

From CosmicBookNews.com

While it has been announced that Star Trek Into Darkness footage will premiere with both the IMAX and regular showings of The Hobbit, we still don't have much of a clue as to what the movie is really about.

Paramount and J.J. Abrams only released the actual Star Trek title a few weeks ago -- and that's all we really know.

We also know that Benedict Cumberbatch is the Star Trek 2 villain, thanks to Abrams who recently let out that tidbit, and the two best guesses as to Cumberbatch's identity are either Khan or Gary Mitchell, with the latter being the most recent favorite.

Gary Mitchell is the friend of Captain Kirk and a Lt. Commander on board the Enterprise serving as a helmsman. In the original Star Trek television episode, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Mitchell becomes an all-powerful being when he comes in to contact with strange energies from the Galactic Barrier, an energy field composed of negative energy.

Now, in a rather interesting interview, Captain Kirk, Chris Pine, offers details about a scene with Benedict Cumberbatch that he describes as featuring "heavy science-fiction" and is a "really hard, hard scene."

Could Chris Pine be describing Benedict Cumberbatch's transformation into the all-powerful Gary Mitchell?

"There’s one scene in it that’s like, you know… in all kinds of heavy science fiction there’s got to be the exposition scene where it’s like, what the hell’s going on?" Pine offers to RadioTimes.com. "It’s a really, really, really hard scene. Not for me, for Benedict - and watching him handle that and to make something that I think, on paper, could have been a death trap for an actor and to see how he [deals with it]…"

Pine continues with mention of just how great an actor Benedict Cumberbatch is, specifically with mention of Cumberbatch's body and voice. More clues to the transformation?

"I think, also, I know that he did Frankenstein. I never got a chance to see it, but his sense of body and voice… he has great command of his instrument or whatever the hell you want to call it. He’s formidable as an actor and as a character in the story. He’s formidable. He’s a great actor,” he said.

Star Trek Into Darkness has a May 17th, 2013 release date in 3D, is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Benedict Cumberbatch as an unnamed villain.
